INTRODUCING...

The Active Learning Case Study Card Decks

These ready-to-use decks help you bring clinical judgment to life in your classroom, lab, or clinical setting. Each unfolding case study walks students through realistic patient scenarios so they can think like a nurse. Without any extra prep for you.

Whether you're covering med-surg, peds, or specialty topics like OB or community health, the decks are designed to make active learning simple, effective, and repeatable.

Here’s what you get:

  • A complete case study as a card deck for individual patients, full clinical units, or decision-making prompts - so you can get real engagement immediately in clinical, classroom, or lab sessions without having to create from scratch.
  • An educator debriefing guide - to give you confidence in leading post-activity discussions and ensures that students draw out clinical reasoning, which is the real value of the activity.
  • An answer key with rationale - that saves you time in prep and helps students understand the “why” behind each answer. This is especially helpful when students ask nuanced follow-up questions.
Flexible formats perfect for small groups, sim labs, post-conference, or even lecture

How it works 💡

Step 1 -

Give students the card deck and some workspace. They watch a short introduction video and get to work!

Step 2 -

Using the cards, students work through the unfolding care of a patient, gather assessment data, make decisions, decide on interventions and evaluate care - just like the CJMM.

Step 3 -

A complete instructor guide accompanies the deck and gives you answer rationale, ideas to increase application, and debriefing discussion points for each scenario.

✨ BONUS TEACHING TOOL ✨

When you spend $50 or more during our Spring Into Active Learning event, you’ll unlock 3 months of free access to Give or Hold?, a web-based pharmacology game designed to help students practice clinical judgment. No prep required.

Pharmacology can be one of the most challenging topics to teach. Between dry med lists and long lists of side effects, it’s easy to lose engagement fast. That’s where Give or Hold? comes in.

🧠 How it works:

You choose the med class, number of case studies, and difficulty level. Students scan a QR code, review a quick clinical scenario, and decide: Would you give the med or hold it?

It’s fast-paced and realistic. Built for ease of use for the educator and to capture the attention of today's nursing student. Use it to wrap up a lecture, bring energy into post-conference, or make the most of extra time in lab without adding anything extra to your to-do list.

Hundreds of pre-built scenarios. Just a few clicks to setup. Zero prep for you.

Currently, I am adding dosage calculation scenarios to the library. So educators can choose whether to include these type of case studies at setup. Imagine students determining if a dose was in safe range.

✨This bonus is only available through January 25th, when you spend $50 or more. Don’t miss it! ✨

Frequently asked questions

How do I use a case study deck in my classroom?

Each deck includes everything you need to get started including an unfolding case study deck, answer key, and a debriefing guide. Simply create small groups of students, ask them to watch the welcome video included on the box, and let them work through the scenario.

Will this work if I already use lecture or other classroom activities?

Yes! These decks are designed to supplement and enhance your existing content, not replace it. Use them at the start of class to activate prior knowledge, mid-lesson for application, or as an end-of-unit review. They are supplemental materials to what you already teach.

Can I use these decks to support accreditation documentation?

Great question! I am currently working on mapping of of the current case study decks with the AACN Essentials (2021). This will help move them toward accreditation-ready rather than just “accreditation-friendly.” I aim to have this documentation ready by mid-2026.

Currently, the decks can be used as artifacts for self-study reports. Programs commonly include the decks as:

  • Course learning activity exemplars
  • Curriculum maps
  • Simulation or unfolding case documentation
  • Assessment and evaluation support materials
Where can the active learning decks be used?

The decks are designed to be flexible and can be used anywhere you teach. Common uses include in the classroom, clinical post-conference, simulation debrief, lab sessions, or even online.
