Unlock a beginner-level, multi-patient unfolding case study set on a surgical unit. Small groups of 4-6 students rotate through four post-operative patients — an ORIF with a complication, a mastectomy recovery, acute renal failure, and a bowel obstruction — practicing pain assessment, wound care, intake and output calculations, and recognizing changes in condition. This physical card deck can be run as one 60-90 minute activity or four standalone 20-minute scenarios, and includes an answer key with debriefing suggestions.

Four Patient Scenarios

Includes post-operative ORIF with complication, post-operative mastectomy with pain, acute renal failure r/t antibiotics and a patient with a bowel obstruction and NG tube. See learning objectives below.

Estimated Time

Stand alone activity takes about 60-90 minutes to complete.

This deck can be done as 4 individual patients, each takes about 20 minutes to complete.

Time is extended to 2+ hours with debriefing suggestions provided in the answer key!

Student focus on one patient at a time and notice changes in condition, practice basic analysis of assessment data and simple interventions, such as I&O calculation.

Post-Operative ORIF

  • Identify abnormal patient assessment findings related to pain
  • Utilize appropriate pain assessment tool for patient with a language barrier
  • Recognize appropriate pain interventions - pharmacological and non-pharmacological

  • Complete a delegation to a CNA

Acute Renal Failure

  • Recognize abnormal assessment findings and relate them to past medical history
  • Complete basic wound assessment and identify appropriate dressing
  • Analyze lab values and trend changes over time
  • Identify complications related to acute renal failure
  • Choose appropriate pain management techniques
  • Prioritize provider orders according to patient needs
  • Evaluate patient response to medical and nursing interventions

Bowel Obstruction

  • Recognize abnormal assessment findings related to small bowel obstruction
  • Complete a focused GI assessment
  • Review NG tube connections and use suction safely
  • Identify potential complications related to small bowel obstruction and related medical and nursing interventions
  • Calculate intake and output
  • Evaluate patient outcomes related to low urine output
  • Communicate with the provider and receive an order
  • Calculate IV fluid rate based on order
